The Society of Fire Protection Engineers

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers was established in 1950 and incorporated as an independent organization in 1971. It is the professional society representing those practicing the field of fire protection engineering. The Society has over 4500 members globally and over 60 regional chapters.

Stanis Yu, President

Stanis has served on SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter's Executive Committee since 2006.

Stanis is currently a Project Handler at Underwriters Laboratories of Canada and has spent over 14 years in the Fire Protection Division evaluating building materials and systems for their reaction to fire and fire resistive properties. Stanis also represents ULC on technical committees of ULC standards.

Stanis is a graduate of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry.

Paul Johnston, First Vice President & Program Chair

Paul Johnston is currently the Program Chair for the SFPE Southern Ontario and has served on the Chapter's Executive Committee since 2008.

Mr. Johnston is a graduate of the Fire Protection Engineering Technology program at Seneca College and has over 30 years of experience regarding insurance risk engineering. He is currently the Manager in the Risk Management / Loss Control Department for the GTA at Aviva Canada and is a Certified Engineering Technologist. He has also attained his CRM (Canadian Risk Management) and CIP (Certified Insurance Professional) designations.

Aside from various management duties, Mr. Johnston works on a variety of risks involving building inspections with the application of Provincial and National fire and building codes.

David Vickers, Second Vice President & Membership Chair

David has served on SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter's Executive Committee since 2010.

David has over 13 years of experience in the fire industry, and is currently a Project Manager at RBA Engineering, which merged with Jensen Hughes, Inc. in 2015. David is a Certified Engineering Technologist and a Certified Fire Protection Specialist with experience in fire safety planning, building and fire codes, and life safety.

Mr. Vickers works on a variety of projects involving building inspections and the application of provincial and national fire and building codes, consulting on architectural designs and concepts, and code analysis for spatial separation, occupant load, and exit capacity calculations. David also presents training on fire safety planning, building and fire codes, and life safety.

Mr. Vickers is a graduate of the Fire Protection Engineering Technology program at Seneca College and also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Trent University.

Derek Grunchy, Treasurer

Derek has over 11 years of experience in the fire industry, and is currently the Program Co-ordinator for the School of Fire Protection Engineering Technology at Seneca College. Derek is a Certified Engineering Technologist with experience in life safety analysis, exposure risk determination, building and fire code interpretation, and suppression system designs.

Mr. Gruchy teaches courses in the areas of Human Behaviour in Fire, Fire Modelling, Fire Dynamics, Fire Pumps, Combustion Chemistry, Fire Code and Fire Protection Fundamentals. He has experience in life safety systems commissioning, suppression system designs, performing building inspections and the application of provincial and national fire and building codes, occupant load, and exit capacity calculations.

Mr. Gruchy was the first graduate of Carleton University’s Fire Safety Engineering program, obtaining his Master’s. Derek’s thesis was on “Occupant Behaviour During Fire Emergencies”. His findings were used in the CUrisk model as well as marineEXODUS to better predict and model occupant behaviour. Previous to these studies, Derek also completed a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Degree (specializing in Computer Integrated Manufacturing) from Carleton University.

Derek also has research experience determining the impact of smoke levels on occupant evacuation capability (performed as part of his thesis, using volunteers from the general public). He has also done research regarding combustion properties for various materials (performed using Seneca College’s cone calorimeter).

Dorota Kuciej, Secretary

Dorota Kuciej is currently the Secretary of SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter and has served on the Executive Committee since 2014.

Dorota Kuciej has over 8 years of experience in the fire industry, and is currently an Associate at LRI Engineering Inc. Dorota is a Certified Technician with experience in fire protection engineering, life safety, building and fire code consulting.

Mrs. Kuciej is responsible for the preparation of building code and fire code assessments for architects, engineers, developers and building owners for commercial, residential, infrastructure and public sector projects, both in Canada and internationally. Experienced in the development of fire engineering equivalencies that are specifically tailored to meet client’s objectives and maintain architectural vision.

Mrs. Kuciej is a graduate of the Civil Engineering Technology program at Ryerson University.

Melinda Amador, P.Eng. MASc, Past President

Melinda Amador has served on the SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter's Executive Committee since 2007.

Melinda has 10 years of experience in the practice of fire protection and life safety consulting. She has project experience in the development of Fire Code and Building Code compliance for complex assembly and commercial applications and industrial facilities, and is familiar with fire suppression system and fire alarm system design, and tender and construction administration. Melinda has extensive knowledge in the application of Provincial and National Fire, Building, and Health and Safety Codes, National Fire Protection Association Standards, FM Data Sheets, and Canadian Standards Association requirements. Melinda is a Chemical Engineer with a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering in Fire Safety from the University of Waterloo.

Currently Melinda is working as a Senior Engineer at CodeNext Inc.

Members-at-Large

Anthony Van Odyk

Anthony has more than 37 years of experience in all phases of fire and life safety - including over over 10 years as an Engineering Consultant and 20 years as a Professor of Fire Protection Systems. He is a Canadian Fire Alarm Association Certified Trainer and CFAA made him a Life Member of the Association - June 2015. He has provided Fire Protection training to over 5000 students.

Served in various capacities - 2nd Vice-President Membership, President, Past President Director of the Southern Ontario Chapter. Also, served on the International Membership Committee for 18 years and represented the SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter on the SFPE International Presidents Council from 1997 to 2005. Membership invoicing for the Chapter for 12 years.

Supported the activities of the International Membership Committee which includes enhancing the membership experience and increasing memberships. Increased the awareness of students in support of the Fire Protection industry.

Currently, Professional Member of SFPE International and serving as a Director for over 20 years. Chapter involvement includes bylaws, history and Chapter Awards.

Organized the Seneca College Thomas Chiang SFPE Memorial Bursary, which has been paying bursaries since 2001. Initiated the establishment of the Thomas Chiang SFPE Memorial Award in 2009.

Organized and acted as Master of Ceremonies for the 35th Anniversary celebration of the Southern Ontario Chapter.

Developed the original website for the Chapter and negotiated the upgrade with the contractor that developed the subsequent site. Initiated the use of Paypal in Membership renewal.

Previously, Editor and Publisher of the SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter Newsletter - the Ignition Source. He has also written various articles for the CFAA Journal, NFPA News, and SP and T News.

David Laks

France Larivee

France Larivee is currently a member-at-large for SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter and has recently joined the Executive Committee.

She has over 25 years of experience providing risk control services in the insurance industry, and is currently the Regional Engineering Lead for GAPS, XL Catlin Property Risk Engineering Group (XL Catlin Toronto Office).

Mrs. Larivee leads a team of experienced, professional loss prevention consultants and risk consultants who visit facilities to assess property and business interruption loss potentials and review the gathered information for underwriting purposes, develop risk improvement strategies and work with our clients on the implementation of these strategies, handle project reviews across a plethora of occupancies and help clients coordinate their risk control plan/activities.

Mrs. Larivee is a B. Eng. Metallurgy Graduate from Ecole Polytechnique, Montréal, Québec and also holds a M. Sc. Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Gerry Bourne

Gerry Bourne is currently a Member-at-Large of SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter's Executive Committee and has been serving on the committee since May 2015.

Gerry is a graduate of McMaster University, receiving his Bachelor Engineering and Management in 2004.Gerry has 10 years of experience in the Fire Protection Industry with broad experience in specialty detection, special hazard systems, sprinkler, fire alarm, and security. He has managed offices, large installation projects, and teams of technical sales associates.

Currently Gerry is the founder and managing partner of CodeNext Inc. a firm of building and fire code professionals.

Jason Ryckman

Jason Ryckman is the National Codes & Standards Manager at the Canadian Automatic Sprinkler Association. He started his fire protection career in June 1998 after graduating from Fire Protection Engineering Technology program at Seneca College in Toronto, Ontario. Mr. Ryckman worked as an Engineering Technician, and Senior Project Manager specializing in fire sprinklers for 16 years in the United States before joining the Canadian Automatic Sprinkler Association in May 2014. Mr. Ryckman is responsible for codes & standards, and fire sprinkler education across Canada assisting all stakeholders in the fire protection industry. Mr. Ryckman completed the Water Based System Layout Level III from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology. Mr. Ryckman is a committee member on NFPA 13, 13 R/D, 14, 25, Ontario Building Code Technical Advisory Committee for Part 3 - Fire Protection, Occupant Safety and Accessibility, and Member at Large SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter.

Jim Chisholm

Jim joined the SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter's Executive in 2016.

Jim is currently a Fire Protection Engineer with Toronto Fire Services. Previously, he was a Fire Protection Engineer with the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management and a Senior Review Engineer in the waste and air/noise units of the Approvals Branch of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.

Jim is on the Executive Board of the Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) and is past chair of the West Toronto Chapter of the Professional Engineers Ontario. He was the organizer and founding President of the Toronto Engineering Club of Speakers (TECS) Toastmaster Club.

Jim has his M.Eng. from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry.

Joseph Alcaraz

Joseph Alcaraz is currently a Member-at-Large of SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter and has served on the Executive Committee since 2011. Joseph was on the 50th Anniversary planning committee in 2015.

Joseph is currently the Assistant Vice President of the National Risk Engineering Services at The Sovereign General Insurance Company. Joseph has 24 years of experience in Insurance Loss Control. A graduate of Ryerson University in Civil Engineering and is a licenced member of the PEO since 1996.

Mickey Milankov

Since 1986, except for a 3 year employment with Protection Mutual as an account executive, Mickey Milankov has been a risk management consultant, assisting the Engineering & Loss Control Departments of various insurers and Toronto brokers. Principal companies assisted by his firm, Milankov Loss Prevention Inc., include Morris & Mackenzie, Hunter, Keilty, Muntz & Beatty, and currently, Hub International HKMB. Prior to starting his consulting practice he spent 7 years as a property underwriter, and eventually underwriting supervisor, with the Highly Protected Risks Department of Kemper Insurance. After graduation, Mr. Milankov entered the risk management field with the Factory Mutual System (FM) as a Fire Protection Consultant specializing on large industrial accounts and eventually as an Ontario Chemical Specialist for FM.

Mickey Milankov is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario. He is a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) and is an Associate in Business Continuity Planning (ABCP). He is a member of the NFPA, member of NFPA’s Architects, Engineers, and Building Officials (AEBO) member section, the Industrial Fire Protection (IFP) member section, and a long time member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Southern Ontario Chapter (SFPE). He graduated with a B.A.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto.
