SPEAKER:

Stephen Mackenzie

Stephen Mackenzie is a London, UK based innovative fire, security and emergency planning consultant with demonstrated multi-disciplinary skills in complex property portfolios. Coupled with long standing academic work as an international subject expert in fire risk assessment and fire safety management.

With established global networks and sector leadership accrued during a career spanning 37 years, Stephen is progressive practitioner with extensive knowledge across a spectrum of built environment and engineering disciplines. Undertaking recent assignments advising UK central and local government, healthcare sector and fire engineering consultancies.

Beyond formal assignments Stephen has spent the past five years, predominantly pro bono contribution to post Grenfell understanding, giving advice to residents and the wide spectrum of stakeholders. Stephen was listed as a global fire safety influencer by IFSEC in 2021 and International Fire and Safety Journal in 2022 and as a top 50 security expert 2018 to 2021 by the Professional Security Magazine

Stephen is a long-standing diversity & inclusion champion, open about his dyslexia and more recent Asperger’s diagnosis to encourage everyone to embrace the unique abilities many neuro-divergent retain. This led Stephen to actively pursue various voluntary and charitable undertakings. Over the years Stephen has quietly sponsored a raft of young professional awards within the built environment, fire safety and emergency services sectors.

As a frequent news commentator on a wide range of fire and explosion incidents, with over 500 press comments, Stephen is now an established fire safety campaigner and exploring a new chapter to a comprehensive career.

SYNOPSIS:

Stephen will discuss considerations to risk in fire and life safety, the objectives of safety and resilience, and integrated risk management.  He will reference a number of case studies including 9/11 and the Grenfell Tower fire, and discuss the available routes to achieve compliance
